Bio

Emerging Artist

Tammy Lorcan is a Brisbane-based, multidisciplinary artist who works mainly with acrylic paints, ink and chalk pastels. She is currently studying an Honours degree in Arts and Design at the University of Canberra, South Bank Campus.

Born in Toowoomba, her family was constantly on the move due to her father being in the army and then the police force. Until the age of six, her family moved all over the Sunshine Coast, before settling in Manly on the south of Brisbane. Though her home life was constantly changing, Tammy was very adaptable and developed a positive and outgoing nature that saw her making friends wherever she went. Throughout her schooling, Tammy was drawn to the arts, often coming home covered in paint and glue much to her mother’s dismay. She was involved in every creative extra-curricular activity that she could get her hands on. Which included prop design and performing for school musicals. Though her interest in the performing arts never bloomed as strongly, her parents were always big supporters and encouraged her to pursue her passion in the arts.

In 2015, Tammy moved to Japan to teach English and additionally found a way to incorporate her skills to teach art to her students. During this time, she was greatly influenced by Japanese culture and animation and pursued personal interests in meditation, fitness and illustration. She returned to Australia in 2017 to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

Since starting her degree, Tammy has been involved in six group exhibitions, the inspirations and meanings behind her works addressing subjects such as the subconscious mind and reclaiming the female form. Though her practice is constantly evolving, Tammy is very passionate about painting and drawing and seeks to find harmony between figure and abstraction.
